Natural Events Happening in July

Look for Summer Seabirds & Albatrosses

Sooty Shearwaters are still here.

Harbor seals - Pupping is in full swing at the west beach of Hopkins Marine Station.

Gray Whales and their babies are still working their way up the coast. Look for them just outside the kelp line.Good whale watching areas are: Big Sur coast, Point Lobos, Pacific Grove, Pebble Beach, Marina, Aptos, Soquel, Capitola, and Santa Cruz. The whales tend to hug the coastline to protect their calves from Orcas and Great White Sharks.

Many sea birds, such as the California-Mew, Bonaparte Gulls; Common and Pacific Loons; Western and Eared Grebes; Surf Scooters, Red-Breasted Mergansers, among others, are molting into their breeding plumage and heading back to their nesting grounds.

Sea Lions are leaving the area to return to their breeding grounds on islands off Southern California (Channel Islands) and Baja Mexico. Fisherman's Wharf and the Coast Guard breakwater jetty are normally great places to see California Sea Lions of all ages. Expect an influx of displaced juvenile (male & some female) sea lions this month; the adults will usually return in August and September.

Blue Whales and Humpbacks are still here.

It's Snowy Plover nesting season. Their nesting areas are located on the dunes (foredunes) and upper parts of the beach. So be cautious and mindful were you step when exploring local beaches. More info at: Snowy Plover Soap Opera Where you can follow the continuing life saga of Mrs. Aquablue-Whiteorange. What became of her husband? He promised to watch the kids, but it’s been days now and he still hasn’t returned home.
